In colonial theory it refers to the act of distinguishing between people on the basis of color.

This is comparable to the term "genitalism" which refers to the difference between men and women based on obvious biological distinctions.

The simplification and stereotyping of Chromatism belies the complexity of cultural identity.

For example, for the entire Asian cultural diversity both original and diasporic to be reduced to yellow people, or the vast complex of African cultures both original and diasporic to be reduced to black people.
