PATTERN & RHYTHM VOCABUALRY

You learned about pattern and motifs in your understanding of composition. A repeated motif can make a pattern. That pattern can create rhythm. Rhythmn is a visual tempo or beat which can create a look or feeling of movement in an artwork. When an artist carefully arranges components of art such as shapes, colors, lines, forms or motifs, they invite the viewer's eye to jump rapidly or glide smoothly from one element to the next. Depending on the arrangement, the viewer's eye can follow a regular, random, progressive, alternating or flowing rhythm.
