General Truths About Composition

There are four elements that help create mood and emotion in composition:

1. Balance - this refers to the way in which elements are arranged in the work to create a feeling of stability.

2. Lines -- refer to the edges of a form/shape, but they also lead the viewer's eye around the composition and communicate information through their character and direction.

3. Shape and Form -- shapes are two-dimensional and forms are three-dimensional and they define objects in space.

4. Patters (or Motifs) -- repeated lines, shapes, colors, textures, values create patterns and they give an image rhythm.
