19. Dependency Theory :

—this concept references the relationship between the dominating culture and the colonized people in which the "Third World" peoples are kept at a low level of subsistence so that they will always be "dependent" upon the dominant culture.
This idea opposed the notion that these poor countries are at a low stage in their development and suggests that the dominant culture "requires" these Third World states to remain at low levels of development because "First World" culture is actually "dependent" upon Third World labor and resources for its survival.
